The article deals with the internal form of a word in its linguodidactic function. Th e purpose of the research is to identify the special role of words’ internal form in a linguistically related Slavic audience. The internal form, shaped by one of the features of the nominated object, is the figurative basis of the nomination. Developing this idea, the author proves that the figurative basis of the word not only verbalizes the result of a person’s cognitive activity and acts as an explicator of linguocultural information, but also realizes a mnemonic connection between the nominant and the nominated object. The linguodidactic significance of the figurative basis of the nomination is that it helps to memorize words when learning a foreign language and to recall and reproduce them in the process of speech activity. Using the comparative method (comparison of Russian, Czech and Slovak languages) and the methods of Semantic, component, derivational and etymological analyses, the author demonstrates the linguodidactic potential of the internal form (sign basis) of lexical units in the Slavic audience, and concludes that even words that are not motivated from the point of view of Russian native
speakers are motivated from the point of view of other Slavic languages speakers due to the preservation of common Slavic roots, verbalizing the fi gurative basis. The grouping of vocabulary proposed by the author is the following: 1) according to the commonality of the motivational feature in the studied language; 2) by the commonality and the diff erence in the feature of the nomination in the native and studied languages. This approach could serve as a frame for a new figurative picture of the world of the studied Russian language. Th e results of the research and the author’s conclusions can be used in writing textbooks of the Russian language for the Slavs, in the practice of teaching it to Slavic and non-Slavic audiences.
