The article investigates the problems of interaction between the cultural code and artistic
imagery in its dynamics. The purpose of the article is to pinpoint and describe the defining
parameters of the cultural code that determine the peculiarities of the characters' images based
on the material of the poem by Mikhail Lermontov “Song about Tsar Ivan Vasilyevich, a Young
Guardsman and a Daring Merchant Kalashnikov.” The research methods are an integral complex,
within which the priority belongs to the inductive and deductive method, the method of analysis
and synthesis, the structural and semiotic method, philological analysis and interpretation. The
novelty of the research lies in combining the methodological tools of linguocultural and literary
studies, allowing one to conclude that the main components of artistic content are implied by
detecting compliance / non-compliance with the cultural code of the ethnic group. Of particular
interest are the complex correlations of the cultural code and the national mentality. It has been
proved that the study of the cultural code from the standpoint of the semiotic approach makes
it possible to interpret the conflict between Kalashnikov and Kiribeevich more broadly than the
resistance to royal power and the opposition to tyranny on the part of the ordinary man: the
plot of events and the dynamics of artistic imagery suggest that the poet puts forward the idea of the impossibility of perceiving such foreign cultural values that
would not correspond to the Russian spiritual code. For Lermontov,
it is also important to affirm the idea of such subjects of the tsar
who would be the carriers of the moral principle and would not so
much blindly submit to the state power. The spiritual cultural code
of the Russian nation for Lermontov is what ensures its progress and
unity
