The article deals with the problem of formation in Russian language textbooks of knowledge about the language adequate to the current state of linguistic scholarship. It is argued that the knowledge about the Russian language acquired by students should not contradict the system of views on the language that has been established in linguistics, and this, in turn, will provide students with the opportunity to effectively master literacy in the broadest sense of this term. The purpose of the work is to substantiate the need to create textbooks on the Russian language for educational organizations to rely on the functional theory of describing the language and demonstrating the results of using this theory in the textbooks “Russian language” for grades 5-9, 10-11 by A.N. Rudyakov and others. The characterization of the main provisions of linguistic functionalism, given in the article, allows to conclude that it is necessary to describe the language and all its units in textbooks on the Russian language precisely from these positions. The article illustrates the implementation of the functional theory of language description in textbooks using concrete examples, defines eff ective forms and methods of work on applying the acquired knowledge in real situations of speech interaction. The article concludes that the assimilation of knowledge about the language, which does not contradict its essence, makes it possible to increase students' motivation to study the “Russian language” subject, to build a system of work on mastering skills to apply the acquired knowledge about the language in a specifi c practice of using the language. Th e eff ectiveness of the textbooks based on methodology of linguistic functionalism is evidenced by many years of using the Russian language textbooks by the Crimean authors in Ukraine, which were awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of education in 2013.
