Questions of Methods of Teaching Literature and New Relevance

The article examines the key tendencies of modern methods of teaching literature and explicates their “painful” points. The authors explain the crisis in literature teaching not only by the “decline” of the readers, but also by the confusion of reading strategies, the spread of such school reading practices that are alien to the perception of a literary text. The task of forming various types of functional literacy — communicative, everyday, legal, informational, — actively introduced nowadays into the literature class not only contradicts artistic perception, but also distorts the main goal of literary education: the literary development of students with its central “mechanism” — the analysis of the literary work. At the stage of analysis, complex analytical work with the text, the thoughtful practice of close reading is replaced by various types of this work’s management, largely associated with the unjustified use of innovations. The authors note that negative tendencies are also being intensified because a large part of teachers have lost the idea of the content of the reading training, of the laws of literary evolution, of the specificity of literary work analysis at school. A critical analysis of the dialogical situations of the lessons of literature has shown their dependence on the sociological, ethical problems of the past, not related to the present. Russian classics require a high tension of thoughts and feelings from the reader, but as it is proved in this article, modern readers tend to avoid complex works, topics and problems, preferring to escape into light text or virtual reality. The study is based on authors’ experience of working with the high school students, on their analysis of modern methodological literature, abstracts of lessons and websites created by the teachers of literature.
