Speech Component in the Profession of Engineer (Based on a Survey of Technical University Students)

The article deals with the speech science component in the engineering profession. The purpose of the article is to draw attention to the demand for speech science knowledge in the engineering profession; to study the ideas of students about the importance of the speech component in engineering education. The material for the article was the results of a survey that was conducted among 1st-2nd year students of Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University. The survey participants expressed their position and argued their point of view, explaining why a good knowledge of the Russian language is / is not important in their profession. The article identifies four groups of reasons why future engineers consider a good knowledge of the Russian language to be in demand among engineering specialists. They are is an improvement in the quality of speech, the use of the Russian language for professional activities, taking into account the status characteristics of the language and the influence of the language on the level of communication skills. The article concludes that speech science knowledge is in demand in the training of engineers. The article notes that respondents demonstrate a pragmatic view of the role of the Russian language in the engineering profession (emphasis on literacy and business communication), pay attention to the status characteristics of the Russian language, associate good command of the Russian language with the level of education, note the importance of good speech training for the implementation of interpersonal communications. The survey results can be used in developing work programs in speech science disciplines and justifying the relevance of studying speech science disciplines at a technical university. The study of speech difficulties faced by technical university students when communicating in an educational and professional environment is identified as a promising direction for further scientific work on the topic.
