The study is based on specifically selected semiotically heterogeneous texts. The interpretations of the concept and related terms being used at the current stage of the development of science are briefly presented. The authors study both the linguistic features of multimodal and multimedia texts and those that are determined by a combination of various semiotic systems. The paper describes the semantics of various nonverbal elements and their significance for perception. The authors point to the didactic effectiveness of the use of semiotically heterogeneous materials for teaching a foreign language. The purpose of the article is to present linguistic and didactic potentials of multimodal and multimedia texts in the field of professionally oriented teaching of Russian as a foreign language. Therefore, such popular genres as an article in a popular science online magazine, an educational poster based on an encyclopedic article and a popular science online video lecture were chosen for analysis. The subject matters of each of the analyzed texts are related to particular professional areas. As a result, the authors propose for each text a set of activities developed for the Russian as a foreign language teaching of the students at CEFR levels B1-B2. In its development, there is a particular focus not only on the linguistic and structural-semantic features of the texts but also on heterogeneous elements represented on equal footing with the verbal part through the medium of information (poster, web page and video). These elements become the objects of description, study, discussion, etc. An important feature of the developed sets of activities are orientation not only towards reproduction or conditional production but also towards students’ independent research and project work.
