Philology at the Southern Federal University: the past and the present

In 1915, the Imperial Warsaw University was evacuated from Poland to Rostov-on-Don,
which marked the beginning of university education, including philological, in the Don region.
The University (at diff erent times under various names such as the Don University, the North
Caucasian University, the Rostov State University) became a major educational and scientific
institution in the city of Rostov-on-Don and served as the basis for the creation of separate
higher educational institutions in the region. In 1930, the Pedagogical Faculty of the North
Caucasian State University was reorganized into the Rostov Pedagogical Institute, which in
1992 was transformed into the Rostov State Pedagogical University. The Rostov State University
and Rostov State Pedagogical University provided professional education in philological specialties, which is currently continued at the Southern Federal
University (in 2006, the two universities were merged). The
article presents the overview how the Russian Language scientific
and methodological research has been developing since the
establishment of the university in Rostov-on-Don. The article
also gives a short summary of various research fields studied
by the scientists of both universities and reflected in numerous
research papers and monographs. The faculty members of the
Southern Federal University continue the traditional research in
Russian Philology as well as pursuing new research areas. The
main spheres of scientific interests are: phraseology, paremiology,
word formation, linguoculturology, functional grammar, rhetoric,
legal linguistics, cognitive linguistics, language and style of fiction.
The dictionary of Russian Don dialects, The big dictionary of the
Don Cossacks, collective monographs and collections of articles
about language and creativity of A. P. Chekhov, M. A. Sholokhov
and A. I. Solzhenitsyn were published. The major ethnolinguistic
research is presently being carried out jointly with the Laboratory
of Philology of the Southern Scientific Center of the Russian
Academy of Sciences.
